Therapy

Individual therapy

As an experienced psychologist I use a combination of approaches and tools when working with individual clients.  I often use a various strategies grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) which are all evidence-based psychotherapeutic approaches, however they may have different focuses and applications as determined by the needs of the clients.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a widely used therapeutic approach that focuses on identifying and challenging negative thought patterns and behaviours. The goal of CBT is to help individuals understand how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are interconnected and to develop healthier thinking and coping strategies.

CBT is particularly effective in addressing issues such as:

  • Anxiety disorders (e.g., social anxiety, generalized anxiety)
  • Depression
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Behavioural, social or emotional difficulties or harmful patterns

Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy

Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) is a form of CBT which focuses on helping individuals identify and change irrational beliefs that lead to emotional distress and unhealthy behaviours. REBT emphasizes the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, aiming to replace irrational, self-defeating beliefs with more rational, constructive ones.

Benefits of REBT include:

  • Improved Emotional Regulation
  • Empowerment to take control of their emotional well-being
  • Long-Term Resilience

REBT is effective for a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, anger management, relationship difficulties, and stress. It provides individuals with practical tools to challenge self-defeating thoughts and create healthier emotional responses.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a more specialized form of therapy that is used for a variety of issues, especially those involving emotional dysregulation. DBT incorporates elements of CBT but places a stronger emphasis on managing intense emotions, improving interpersonal relationships, and developing mindfulness and acceptance skills.

DBT is particularly useful for adolescents struggling with:

  • Emotion regulation difficulties
  • Self-harm behaviours
  • Negative thinking or behavioural patterns

I make use of CBT, REBT and DBT as valuable approaches in my practice to address specific thought, emotional and behaviour patterns, to process past experiences while offering comprehensive strategies and coping tools for clients to be able to deal more effectively with personal challenges and overall functioning.

Art therapy

Art therapy is a therapeutic approach that integrates creative expression, such as drawing, painting, or sculpting, to help individuals explore and express their emotions, thoughts, and experiences. In child and adolescent psychology, art therapy can be particularly effective because it provides a non-verbal outlet for children and teens who may struggle to articulate their feelings or may feel uncomfortable with traditional talk therapy.

Through the creation of art, children and adolescents can:

  • Express emotions they may not be able to put into words.
  • Explore difficult or traumatic experiences in a safe and controlled way.
  • Develop self-awareness, coping skills, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strengthen communication skills by discussing their artwork with the therapist.
  • Build self-esteem and confidence through the creative process.

Art therapy can be a transformative, gentle yet powerful approach to help young clients process their emotions, improve mental health, create self-awareness, process various experiences and perceptions in an attempt to foster a better overall sense of self and holistic daily functioning.

Play Therapy

Play therapy is a therapeutic approach designed primarily for children, using play as a medium for communication and emotional expression. Since children often lack the verbal skills to express complex emotions, play therapy allows them to explore feelings, resolve conflicts, and develop problem-solving skills through the natural language of play. It provides a safe, comfortable environment where children can express themselves without feeling pressured to verbalize their thoughts directly.

Play therapy is especially helpful with fostering the following:

  • Emotional regulation and expression.
  • Building social skills and improving relationships.
  • Processing traumatic experiences in a non-threatening way.
  • Addressing behavioural issues such as aggression, anxiety, or defiance.
  • Developing self-confidence and resilience.

Play therapy allows me to observe patterns in a child’s play, gaining insights into their inner world, and helps facilitate therapeutic healing in a way that feels accessible and engaging for the child.

Family Therapy

In Family therapy, my focus is on facilitating healthy communication and strengthening relationships within the family system. By addressing underlying dynamics and fostering collaboration, I help families work through conflicts, build resilience, and create a supportive environment for growth and healing.

Group Therapy

Group therapy can be a powerful way to connect with others and work through challenges together. It offers a supportive environment where participants can share experiences, learn from each other, and receive feedback. I mostly offer group work for adolescents which focuses on social and coping skills by encouraging connection and support.

Benefits of group therapy include:

  • To foster a sense of belonging and reduce feelings of isolation.
  • Creating awareness of diverse Perspectives:
  • Improved communication skills
  • Fostering accountability
  • Shared learning
  • Cost-Effectiveness
  • Validation and skill development
